OUR MISSION: TO ENRICH POLICY-MAKING WITH INNOVATIVE APPROACHES USING SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY FOR A SUSTAINABLE, SECURE AND INCLUSIVE SOCIETY

AI and Governance

Artificial Intelligence is one of the most newsworthy technologies of the day. While entrepreneurs and technologists have been working on solutions for some time now, 2017 was a watershed year from the perspective of governments and social organisations. China, US, Japan, UK and many other countries have rolled out their policies and discussion papers. On the social front, ITU kick-started an annual global summit, aptly called: “AI for Good”. Following suit, India too constituted a task force for AI policy. The NITI Aayog released a discussion paper with the tag line #AIFORALL

CSTEP as technology-policy think tank is also examining AI as a strategic initiative. Our focus is on issues related to implementation in order to improve governance as well as the policy perspectives and societal implications of these solutions. AI, like most other path-breaking technologies, do not work in isolation. They must be embedded along with the existing system, its processes, and associated technologies. Four sectors have been adopted for immediate focus: Health & Nutrition, Education, Urban Planning and Agriculture.

The Health and Nutrition solution is aimed at managing the health and malnutrition of children and recent mothers. It is multi-sectoral program to help the grassroots workers in managing addressing malnutrition. It also provides policymakers and administrators with actionable insights.

Artificial Intelligence provides the crucial backbone to this solution. Trial Image and Photo-based solutions are being developed for increased accuracy and effectiveness of health and malnutrition tracking. Photo and Fingerprint based solutions are planned for authenticating a reliable service delivery to beneficiaries. AI with advanced analytics will provide risk assessment alerts, causal analysis and recommendations to nodal agencies.

CSTEP is interested in young professionals with expertise in the application of AI technologies and with a passion for making an impact in human development.
